Social Care translator

Time Commitment: Minimum one set morning or afternoon per week, ideally 1 – 2 days if comfortable and sustainable amid other commitments

Minimum Education Level: Training and/or experience in offering translation services

summary:

As a member of the Social Care Translator Team, you will help Lisbon Project provide high-quality, consistent support to community members. Your role includes providing translation and interpretation during Bridge/Care Team 1:1 Drop-in Sessions and supporting communication between community members and other programmes within Lisbon Project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Providing emotional support: 

• Be available for 1:1 drop-in sessions as per your timetable – sit with Bridge/Care Team and  community members, following the flexible session structure as outlined in training and practice sessions

• Record Drop-in Sessions through shared team ‘form’ to support team development of data and practices 

• Engage in supervision support provided by Social Care Team Manager

• Contributing to AdminHub and Family Friday workshops: 

• Engage in team discussions on these topics and volunteer to develop written/visual article or workshop ideas where appropriate 

• Support other Lisbon Project programmes with translation and communication for community members when needed, and assist with translating or developing documents and resources in other languages.

Requirements:

• Fluency in Portuguese (if possible) and English is required; knowledge of other community languages is highly desirable;

• Qualifications, studies or experience relating to social work or law;

• Familiarity with Portuguese administrative systems highly desirable;

• Qualifications, studies or experience relating to social work or law highly desirable;

• Experience in intercultural communication and/or with communicating with people in vulnerable situations highly desirable;

• Required ability to work independently but in active communication with team members and supervisors;

• Highly desired experience of managing expectations and communicating boundaries clearly;

• Required commitment to serving migrant communities with care and compassion, providing them with crucial support to further their integration in Portuguese society.
