Volunteer Portuguese Teacher

Time Commitment: 6 hours per week – Minimum 13-14 weeks 

Reports to: Education Program Manager 

Minimum Education Level: Upper secondary education 

Start date: As soon as possible

The Lisbon Project is a non-profit organization that exists to protect and integrate the lives of migrants and refugees in the city of Lisbon. We are currently seeking volunteers to teach Portuguese to foreigners. We will be offering intensive courses for levels A1 and A2 of six hours a week for 13-14 weeks. Additionally, some preparatory work for the classes would also be expected though we already have a bank of materials, and we will offer you support to plan and deliver your lessons. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Implement and deliver the curriculum provided by the Lisbon Project.  

  • Provide a creative and dynamic class, using a range of media and resources (video, music, games). 

  • Keep the students’ attendance sheets up to date.   

  • Mark, grade and give written/verbal feedback whenever appropriate.   

  • Inspire and motivate students to learn and practice the language.    

  • Ensure that students’ varying needs and interests are met.   

  • Ensure you are teaching bearing in mind our students need to learn Portuguese, but the main goal is that they integrate into Portugal and strengthen their feeling of belonging in this country, so it feels like home. 

  • Maintain frequent and open communication with the Education team of the Lisbon Project.    

  • Participate in training sessions and weekly meetings provided by the Lisbon Project. 

  • Following the minimum performance guidelines (MPGs). To be consulted internally with the position's supervisor.


Requirements:


  • Native or C1 level of Portuguese 

  • A conversational level of English 

  • Being available on one or more of the following schedules: 

 

Mon (Online) -Tue (In person) -Thu (In person) 

10:30-12:30 

Mon (Online) -Tue (In person) -Thu (In person) 

17:00-19:00 

Mon (Online) -Tue (In person) -Thu (In person) 

19:00-21:00 

  • You will be co-teaching so you can decide with your co-teacher whether you want to teach together, or take turns and choose the days of the week that work best for you.

  • Experience in foreign language teaching is ideal but not mandatory.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective listening.  

  • Cultural awareness and ability to interact with people from different cultures, genders, religions, and backgrounds.
