Role: Portuguese Welcome Course Volunteer-Teacher

Reports to: Portuguese Welcome Course Coordinator 

Minimum Education Level:  12th Grade / High School

Time Commitment: Once a week for 2 hours in person at LP (17:30-19:00 or 19:30-21:00)

Start date: TBC, around March 2026

End date: 8 weeks from Start date.


SUMMARY:

The Lisbon Project is a non-profit organization that exists to protect and integrate the lives of migrants and refugees in the city of Lisbon. We are currently seeking volunteers to teach Portuguese to our community members in the Portuguese Welcome Course. 

The Portuguese Welcome Course is a short course based in a communicative approach, and it’s aimed at adult migrant students with no previous knowledge of Portuguese and need to learn the language for social integration purposes. The course takes 8 weeks, consisting of one session a week. Additionally, some preparatory work for the classes would also be expected.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement and deliver the curriculum provided by the Lisbon Project.    

  • Give written/verbal feedback whenever appropriate. 

  • Inspire and motivate students to learn and practice the language.    

  • Ensure that students’ varying needs and interests are met.   

  • Maintain frequent and open communication with the Education team of the Lisbon Project.    

  • Provide a creative and dynamic class, using a range of media and resources (video, music, games). 

  • Participate in training sessions provided by the Lisbon Project.



REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluent in English and Portuguese.

  • Willingness to be added to the necessary WhatsApp Group.

  • Being available on Wednesdays from 17:30 to 19:00 or 19:30 to 21:00, from 8th October to 3rd December.

  • Experience in teaching Portuguese is not mandatory.  

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective listening.   

  • A detail-oriented, efficient, responsible, reliable and committed person.  

  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work demands.  

  • Interest in education and willingness to learn new things and skills.

  • Cultural awareness and ability to interact with people from different cultures, genders, religions, and backgrounds.
